In the final weeks of last term, our Year 9 English students could be seen running around in Shakespearean dress, quoting from Romeo and Juliet as they rehearsed their lines from a scene in the play.
After writing an analytical essay comparing Baz Luhrmann’s modern adaptation and the original, students could choose to either film a scene or perform live for their peers under the fig tree. We had some stunning performances, with a number of groups using the fig tree as a dramatic element in their set with the branches forming the famous balcony.
We also viewed some visually exciting films with a number of groups confidently bringing Shakespeare to life, which just goes to show how this timeless piece can still touch us 400 years on.
